Pre-med Journey – High School and Undergrad Course requirements

April 28, 2024

Most medical schools have prerequisite courses that must be completed prior to matriculation.

The requirements for medical school can vary based on the institution you select. Some qualifications can include at least one year in courses like:

  • General chemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Getting an early start on pre-med planning will help you fit these courses into your schedule while staying on track with other degree requirements and electives.

Your undergraduate degree doesn’t affect whether you’re accepted or rejected from medical school. For example, if you have a bachelor’s degree in communications but take all the prerequisite courses, you can still apply for medical school.

It is important to choose the right undergraduate degree because it ensures you gain valuable educational experience with biology, human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, clinical practices, clinical research, psychology, sociology, genetics and other topics.

The right undergraduate degree can also help you prepare for future residency programs in specialty areas after the completion of your medical school degree (e.g., pediatrics, psychiatry, sports medicine and orthopedics).

By choosing the right undergraduate degree, you can develop the knowledge and skills you’ll need to succeed in medical school and demonstrate to admissions officers that you have the potential to succeed in a rigorous medical school program.
